We lived in one of the few remaining alleyway carriage houses in DC and I’ve loved learning about the history of DC’s alleyways. Thank you for this great article!
Thank you. Yes, my ancestors were from DC. The protagonist in my novel immigrated with his family in 1834 and his wife's family had moved to DC from Maryland in 1812. She was of English descent. Most of my family still lives in the DMV.
I am envious that you lived in DC! DId you grow up there? Where was the alleyway carriage house? I would love to see a photo. The history is fascinating.
Very interesting! Looking forward to learning more. The boarding house culture in DC is really interesting. There are so many big townhouses that must’ve made good boarding houses. I once shared a big old townhouse with 7 housemates, reminiscent of DC’s boarding house days.
Moved to DC for college and stayed for 10 years after that. Just left this year for Spain as things were getting too crazy and stressful there for a young family.
Wow you are in Spain now what a wonderful experience to give your children as well! I love hearing about your experience in an old DC boarding house, or reminiscent of one. In my novel, my immigrant family stayed in a boarding house when they arrived as so many of the politicians and those who went to speak to Congress did.
Are you planning any author events in Washington D.C.?
Yes, I am definitely planning for author events in and around Washington DC. Thank you for asking Colin.
Fantastic quotes! Are your ancestors from DC?

Sounds super interesting! I read Briar Club which was also set in a DC boarding house too.
